Hypnosis for Minor Surgical Procedures.

چکیده

Patients attending accident and casualty departments often present anaesthetic problems. They are usually unaccompanied, have recently had a meal and may be shocked. A full stomach means a delay of several hours before a general anaesthetic can be administered. Various measures have been used to overcome these difficulties, for example Pearson (1960) advocated the use of intravenous pethidine. Hypnosis has been used in the treatment of asthma (Edwards, 1960), skin conditions (Wink, 1961), in obstetrics and gynaecology (Perchard, 1960; Green-Armytage, 1960) and in general medicine (Hastings, 1961). Such treatment has taken place over a period, with many sessions with the hypnotist. In the present series of forty-one cases all patients were treated in one session, without previous conditioning. All patients suffered from conditions requiring minor surgical procedures. Four patients who refused hypnosis and fourteen patients who could not be traced are not included in the series. The cases were selected at random, patients being given the offer of hypnosis whilst waiting for a general anaesthetic which usually could only be given after a few hours delay, until the stomach had emptied.

Hypnosis as sole anesthesia for major surgeries: historical & contemporary perspectives.

Hypnosis is a well validated treatment for acute and chronic pain (Montgomery, DuHamel, & Redd, 2000). It has been found capable of reducing inflammation, altering blood flow, and producing beneficial effects when hypnotic suggestions are provided during and prior to surgery (Frederick, 2001) and other painful medical procedures. This paper quotes extensively from historical examples of the use...

A comparison of the clinical effectiveness of various acupuncture points in reducing anxiety to facilitate hypnotic induction.

This study determined if any acupuncture point (acupoint) known for its calming effects also aided hypnotic induction. Hypnosis was offered to 108 patients requiring minor surgical or dental procedures. All had a history of panic attacks and surgical or dental phobias that complicated or prevented treatment. Unpleasant intruding thoughts of imminent invasive treatments handicapped their ability...

A 62-yr-old male with severe ankle osteoarthritis was listed for bilateral ankle arthroscopy. The patient had previously underg...

The American Journal of Clinical hypnosis.

The extent to which self-hypnosis can be used in surgical procedures is a topic of controversy. This author considers the limits imposed, by the literature, on the effectiveness of self-hypnosis in major abdominal surgery to be academic and unfounded. This is an account of a cholecystectomy performed using self-hypnosis as the sole anesthetic agent. Muscle relaxation, shallow breathing, pulse r...
